Education Majors - Student Teaching

Education majors have the option of completing part of their student teaching program abroad.  This unique opportunity allows teacher candidates to interact with a diverse group of students and teachers, to plan and teach using different curriculum models, and to formulate a global perspective on education. Teaching responsibilities include observation, individual tutoring, and small group teaching; several weeks of co-teaching and some individual whole-class teaching; and several weeks of complete responsibility of the classroom. Orientation meetings will be held with a supervisor prior to departure.  The student teaching experience includes one placement of 8 weeks. This will be combined with local placement in St. Cloud after student teaching abroad. Actual placement will be evaluated on an individual basis.

Port Elizabeth, South Africa has beautiful beaches, parks, and a wonderful city life. The student apartments are situated just across from King’s Beach, a wonderful place to walk, swim, surf, or simply sunbathe. The North and South campuses of Nelson Mandela are situated within the grounds of a nature reserve and allow students the unique opportunity of taking a nature walk and seeing zebra, springbok, and various kinds of monkeys in between classes!  Marine Drive is the main road that runs along the ocean and offers the majority of the Port Elizabeth and Summerstrand area attractions.  The Boardwalk and pier bring shopping, live events, food, and nightlife together while restaurants such as Barney’s or the Blue Waters Café offer beachside views and delicious dishes.  For weekend or break-time excursions, local travel options give students the opportunity to travel to other parts of South Africa and see amazing places such as Capetown, the New York of South Africa; Hogsback, the amazingly beautiful mountain district that inspired native JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings; and many, many more!

SCSU students are housed in single-room apartment-style dormitories called Campus-Key. Students will have their own private bedroom and bathroom but will have a kitchen are shared with one other student. There is also two living spaces that are shared with other students living in the housing.
