Language Programs

A great way to increase your language skills is to immerse yourself in the location where the language is spoken. By being abroad you will have the opportunity to not only take courses abroad towards your major/minor but it will also give you the best experience in learning the language by having to use it in your daily life. 

At St. Cloud State, we have a few programs that you should check out! 

 

Critical Language Scholarship Program

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a summer study abroad opportunity for American college and university students to learn languages essential to America’s engagement with the world. Those include: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu. If you apply for the program you must also complete the SCSU application found by clicking here in order to obtain credit.  

Chinese 

China - Summer

During this two week experience in China led by SCSU faculty and staff, students will have the opportunity to explore three different cities Beijing, Siping, and Chungchun. Students have the chance to fully immerse themselves in the Chinese culture by being paired with a host Chinese student from Jilin Normal University. Students will gain an insight on family dynamics in the Chinese culture through a home stay with their host student. Students will take multiple classes while on this trip some of the classes they will partake in are beginners Chinese Language, an Appreciation of Chinese Opera, and Chinese Calligraphy. Explore the amazing opportunity to explore the spectacular sites China has to offer!

German 

Eichstätt, Germany - Spring Semester

This program is a great fit for any German student because the University of Eichstätt offers classes at various language levels, as well as courses dealing with culture, film, literature and history offer insight into contemporary Germany. Eichstätt is a vibrant university town in Bavaria close to Ingolstadt and Munich. Students can choose between spending spring or summer in Eichstätt.

Eichstätt, Germany - Summer 

The Eichstatt summer program is gives students the opportunity to study abroad in the heart of Bavaria. You can choose between two different courses that include language classes to suit your level of proficiency. You will gain valuable insights into German and Bavarian cultural traditions, literature and history, and also have the chance to visit iconic landmarks.

Japanese 

Akita, Japan - Semester/Year

St. Cloud State University has two locations in Akita where students can take courses. Akita International University has courses available in Japanese language as well as other majors. Akita National University focuses more on Japanese language courses. 

Fukuoka, Japan - Semester

At Seinan Gakuin University, students will experience the life and culture of Japan, a place that has long fascinated people from around the world. The school is located in the heart of Fukuoka, a harbor city in Western Japan on Kyushu Island.  Known as the “gateway to Asia” Fukuoka is one of Japan’s largest cities and it offers students an exciting environment to learn and grow. 

Tokyo, Japan - Semester/Year

St. Cloud State University has two locations in Tokyo where students can take course. Daito Bunka University and Rikkyo University
 

Spanish 

Buenos Aires, Argentina - Semester and Summer

Come experience life in the second largest country in Latin America. Study Spanish at the Universidad de Belgrano, the top-ranked university in Latin America. Choose from a variety of courses in English or Spanish including economics, history, gender studies, and literature – all of which focus specifically on Argentina and Latin America. Explore the cosmopolitan city of Buenos Aires, dance the tango, drink mate, and become a part of the city that never sleeps. There are tree-lined streets, cafes on every corner, and fantastic shopping.

Cusco, Peru - Semester

Immerse yourself in Spanish language and Peruvian culture while in the ancient home of the Incan civilization. On our Semester in Cusco program, you'll quickly learn why this great city is a World Heritage Site visited by millions of travelers every year. Study at Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola, a small, beautiful campus centrally located so you can explore Cusco, the center of modern indigenous culture in Peru. Take courses in Incan history, photography, and biodiversity, as well as Spanish and Quechua language classes.

Salamanca, Spain - Summer

This program is led by SCSU Professor Kurinski and is 4 week program in the beautiful City of Salamanca which has a long tradition as a destination for students. Salamanca is best known for its Renaissance architecture and amazing food. Students will take classes at MESTER which has a team of highly qualified and committed language educators, who use effective teaching methods and modern technology to facilitate language acquisitions. All study abroad participants will take Spanish 110 (taught in English), which will be focused on various aspects of Spanish culture. There will also be cultural and social activities every afternoon/evening including: excursions, salsa dancing lessons, tapas tours, and visiting historical monuments. 

Sevilla, Spain - Semester 

Ideal for the first-time traveler or students who are hoping to gain a better understanding of Spanish culture and language, the ISA Study Center with Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo (UIMP) is focused specifically for students, placing high emphasis on Spanish language, literature, culture, business, and education. ISA students will only be taking courses with other ISA students, and the campus is shared by the ISA office, so you will have regular interaction and support from the resident staff.

Valparaíso & Viña del Mar, Chile - Semester and Summer

ISA has had programs in Valparaíso and Viña del Mar since 1996, the first Latin American site for ISA programs! Affectionately known as Valpo and Viña, these two sister cities are located halfway down Chile's endless coastline. You will get the best of both worlds as each city offers a unique and different experience. Viña is known for its modernity and beautiful beaches, which attracts tourists from all over the world; while Valpo is a historic port city covered in tasteful graffiti art and singing colorful hills. An UNESCO World Heritage Site, Valpo has charm that is like none other.
