Program Description:


Travel across the beautiful country of Costa Rica while discovering its culturally and biologically rich environment. Nestled between Nicaragua and Panama, Costa Rica is the perfect blend of tropical and rainforest climates. While participating in this program, SCSU students will travel to multiple cities and explore all that Costa Rica has to offer with an emphasis on geography. Students who are interested in Spanish, Travel and Tourism, Biology, Environmental Studies, and/or History and Culture will also benefit greatly from this opportunity.

GEOG 410/GLST 410: Landscapes and Conservation in Costa Rica

Students must take the course above to participate in this program. The course will show up on the students spring semester course list.


Students will study biodiversity conservation, sustainable ecotourism development, community health, education issues, migration and cultural issues, plants and animals of the tropics. They will also learn about urban and regional geographical issues that impact conservation. Excursions include hiking up an inactive volcano cone, whitewater rafting, boating across a large wetland complex, soaking in the volcanic hot springs, snorkeling in the warm Pacific Ocean, a night tour of the rainforest, a cultural tour of downtown San José, and much more!


SCSU students are housed in hotels throughout their travels across Costa Rica.


  • Freshman status or above
  • GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • Open to all majors 
  • Students should first apply with SCSU online
  • Once accepted, students will be provided with application instructions for EF Tours
