Daito Bunka University is one of Tokyo’s oldest traditional and historical universities and it specializes in research and study of Eastern cultures. The university has two campuses: Itabashi, Tokyo and Higashi Matsuyama, Saitama, which is fifty minutes via train north of the center of Tokyo. Language courses are held at the Higashi Matsuyama campus, which is nestled in lush, natural surroundings. The program is designed to provide intensive Japanese language instruction and a comprehensive understanding of Japanese culture. Boasting an international population of over 400 students, prospective students will have ample time to learn about eastern cultures through immersion and cultural excursions.
Although no prior knowledge of Japanese is required to participate in this program, it is recommended students take at least one semester of Japanese prior to participation. Upon arrival, students’ Japanese language skills will be assessed and they will be placed into an appropriate level eight-credit Japanese language course. Topics will include conversation, translation, grammar, listening and composition. In addition to the language course, students will participate in a fieldwork course, which is 2 credits. Other course options include politics, economy & society, culture & art, history and current issues in Japan.
Tokyo is the metropolitan and cultural center of Japan, and the local areas around Tokyo central are some of the most famous destination spots in all of Japan. Places such as Akibahara are world renowned as the electronic capital of the world and Harajuku as the fashion capital of Japan. In addition, Tokyo station is the gateway to places such as Kyoto, the historical capital of Japan. The shinkansen (bullet train) allows you to travel to the rest of Honshu Island and Shikoku as well as Kyushu islands quickly, comfortably, and safely.
There are three housing options on or close to campus. The housing and utilities cost approximately 50,000 yen ($500) per month. Two of the dormitories are one bus stop away from campus and a one way ticket is approximate 140 yen ($1.40) or a train pass that is 2,000 yen ($20) per month.
