At Seinan Gakuin University, students will experience the life and culture of Japan, a place that has long fascinated people from around the world. The school is located in the heart of Fukuoka, a harbor city in Western Japan on Kyushu Island. Known as the “gateway to Asia” Fukuoka is one of Japan’s largest cities and it offers students an exciting environment to learn and grow. Seinan Gakuin is a humanities-focused university with undergraduate departments in theology, literature, commerce, economics, law, human sciences, and intercultural studies. The University was one of the first schools in Japan to establish a foreign exchange program with universities overseas, thus creating a long tradition of welcoming students from other lands.

The academic program at Seinan Gakuin requires students to take eight credits in Japanese language. Upon arrival, students are tested to determine their proficiency in the Japanese language and are placed in an appropriate class level. The classes are separated into 4 credits of language studies and 4 credits of reading and writing. Students can select additional courses from the electives available and those courses will fulfill general/goal or major area requirements at Saint Cloud State. The credits earned at Seinan Gakuin will transfer back to St. Cloud State University.
During the fall semester, students have the opportunity to participate in a class trip to Kyoto for 3 days to visit the historical capital of Japan. In addition, Hakata station located in Fukuoka, is a major transportation hub that provides transport on local trains and Shinkansen (Bullet Train) to anywhere in Japan. Examples of nearby cities to visit include Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Beppu and Kagoshima. While in Fukuoka, students will have the opportunity to experience the vibrant city life while also experiencing the traditional Japanese lifestyle.
The main dormitory of the international student body is the International dorm located on campus. Students from every country are represented in the dorm including Japanese students who advise visiting international students on variety of topics from issues related to coursework to doctor appointments. There is also an option to live in an off-campus dormitory with Japanese students. The final living option is a home-stay opportunity with a Japanese family. The home stays usually last for about a month and then the student will be moved into one of the dormitories, space permitting.
